How do you ensure water quality for sterilization?

Autoclave feed water needs conductivity below 15 µS/cm and chloride below 2 mg/L (EN 13060 Annex C). We test the supply, then fit either a softener plus carbon filter or a reverse osmosis unit depending on the result. Conductivity is checked again after install.

What validation testing is performed?

Three consecutive cycles using Bacillus stearothermophilus biological indicators, chemical indicator strips inside the chamber, a Helix test for hollow loads, and a Bowie-Dick test for porous loads on Class B units. Cycle printouts and indicator results are kept in the validation file.

What maintenance is required after installation?

Daily: Helix or chemical indicator on the first cycle, drain check. Weekly: door gasket inspection, chamber clean. Annually: gasket replacement, pressure relief test, recalibration, and a fresh validation cycle. We can include all of this in a maintenance contract.

Sterilization Installation
Installation & Validation

Equipment install, water and drainage connections, calibration, and EN 13060 cycle validation. One contractor handles the whole sterilization room.

Autoclave Installation

Class B autoclaves (vacuum, capable of porous and hollow loads) and Class S/N units installed with steam generator priming, pressure relief checks, and the first three validation cycles run on site.

Ultrasonic Cleaner Setup

Ultrasonic baths set up with the correct enzymatic detergent, water temperature 30-40 °C, and a cavitation test on the first run. Drain and overflow connections sized to the unit.

Water Connections & Plumbing

Demineralised water feed for the autoclave (conductivity below 15 µS/cm), softener or RO unit where the supply is hard, dedicated drain with air gap, and a pressure regulator on the cold feed.

Validation & Compliance Testing

Biological indicators (Bacillus stearothermophilus), Helix test for hollow-load chambers, Bowie-Dick for porous, and a printed cycle log per EN 13060. Documentation handed over signed.

How a sterilization room is installed and signed off.

Site Assessment

We measure the room, check the electrical supply (most Class B units need a dedicated 16A line), test the water hardness and pressure, and confirm the drain and ventilation are usable.

1-2 hours

Water System Installation

Cold feed run with isolation valve and regulator. RO unit or demineraliser fitted if water quality is below the autoclave manufacturer spec. Drain with air gap to local plumbing code.

4-6 hours

Equipment Installation

Autoclave, ultrasonic, washer-disinfector and sealer placed and connected. Levelling checked, doors aligned, electrical and water terminations made by a licensed installer.

6-8 hours

System Calibration

Cycle parameters set against the manufacturer service manual. Door safety interlock, pressure release, and over-temperature cut-out tested before the first load.

2-3 hours

Validation & Testing

Three consecutive validation cycles per EN 13060 with biological and chemical indicators. Helix and Bowie-Dick where applicable. Printed records and a signed validation certificate handed over.
